Marrakech - between culture and nature

Majorelle garden
Majorelle garden

Discover the heritage of the former capital of the Almoravid and Almohad Empires. To make sure you don’t miss out on any of Marrakech’s fabulous treasures, take part in an exciting walking tour of the city accompanied by an English-speaking guide. Marrakech has preserved a rich heritage, with the oldest monuments dating back to its foundation in the 11th century. The splendor of Arab-Andalusian art rubs shoulders with scenes of daily life that take you back hundreds of years. Follow your guide to the foot of the Koutoubia Mosque. Entrance is forbidden to non-Muslims. Observe its impressive minaret and the perfect harmony of its forms! The building was erected in the 12th century under the Almohad dynasty. On its esplanade, archaeologists have found the remains of Marrakesh’s first palace, which has now disappeared.

As for the resplendent Palais de la Bahia, it’s still there! Its gardens are a veritable ode to life. The palace itself is a succession of beautifully frescoed apartments and tree-lined patios.

At the Si Said Museum, recently renamed the Tapestry and Weaving Museum, your guide will take you on a tour of Morocco’s ancestral know-how. The museum presents a collection that is unique in the world, displayed in a completely renewed modern scenography. It showcases some of Morocco’s oldest pieces!

Spend the afternoon exploring Marrakech’s many gardens. You’ll be confronted with an absolutely lush vegetation. Thanks to a 1,000-year-old irrigation system unique in the world, Marrakech is like an oasis in the middle of the desert! Listen to your senses! Smell, look, touch! And don’t forget the Majorelle Garden. This magnificent botanical garden boasts some 300 species. Its centerpiece is an Art Deco villa that has been awarded the “Maisons des Illustres” label since 2011, as well as the Museum of Berber History.

Night in Marrakech.
Breakfast included. Lunch and dinner on your own.

Day 3

Marrakech – Essaouira

Essaouira
Essaouira

This morning, your driver will take you to your Riad in the center of Essaouira. The former Mogador of the Portuguese, now renamed Essaouira, is sheltered behind powerful fortifications dating from the mid-18th century. The city’s almost-island setting is cradled by gentle tropical trade winds, providing a particularly favorable climate. Whatever the season, the temperature in Essaouira hovers around 20°. Its medina is also breathtakingly charming. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.

Once you’ve settled into your Riad, set off to explore the city. Stroll through the lively, colorful souk, along the sandy beach overlooking the Atlantic, the ramparts and the port. Enjoy a tasting of fresh fish and seafood!

Finally, round off the day with a cooking class at an Essouira women’s association in the heart of the Medina. This is your chance to learn all about the wonderful local flavors!

Day 4

Essaouira - the cultural side

Essaouira port
Essaouira port

Essaouira is a veritable open-air palace. The city has so many monuments and treasures that it’s hard to choose. The Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah Museum is a must for all lovers of popular arts and traditions. The museum boasts one of the richest collections of its kind.

If you don’t know the medina, you don’t know Essaouira! Stroll through its maze of cobbled streets, lined with white and blue houses and bathed in the cool glow of the ocean sun. And don’t worry: it’s impossible to get lost in Essaouira!

Essaouira is also renowned as a city of arts and crafts. For a taste of local life, visit the market on Avenue Mohammed Zerktouni. Various souks, such as the jewellers’, stretch along the avenue. As for the craftsmen’s quarter, it’s packed with small stalls and workshops. Here, craftsmen produce genuine objets d’art in ebony or lemon wood, sometimes decorated with copper. Continue on to Artists’ Square, where painters and musicians set up shop to exhibit their work or play in public!

Climb the steps up to the sqala, a former artillery platform that protected the fortifications. It offers a dazzling view of the ocean. Let time stand still for a few minutes and relax. Observe the changing colors of the ocean and the choreographed ballet of seabirds.

End the day at the port! This is located at the end of the peninsula. Here you can see a shipyard where craftsmen use period techniques to build traditional wooden trawlers. Enjoy the magnificent view from the walkway: your gaze will sweep from Essaouira beach to the beautiful Purpuaires Islands off the coast.

Sidi Kaouki
Sidi Kaouki

This day is dedicated to sports enthusiasts. Are you a thrill-seeker? You can’t miss the wild beaches near Essaouira! The Berber village of Sidi Kaouki is a favorite meeting place for many kitesurfers. They particularly appreciate the extraordinary wave quality provided by the Atlantic Ocean. Swimming is not recommended, however, as the currents are quite strong.

However, Sidi Kaouki is also known for its peaceful walks. Stroll along its immense beach or indulge in a few moments of idleness on one of the terraces of the many seaside restaurants!

Agafay desert
Agafay desert

Put on your adventurer’s costume and climb aboard a 4×4, heading for the Agafay desert. Located just 30 kilometers from Marrakech, it covers several hundred hectares. It consists of rocky ground from which impressive white dunes emerge. In the distance, the snowy elegance of the Atlas Mountains offers spectacular views.

In the heart of this desert, the Enchanted Oasis is worthy of a tale from the Arabian Nights. A haven of peace and serenity, it is home to exceptional flora and fauna. Take a look at the frogs and turtles living peacefully in the fresh waters of the wadi!Deep in the dunes, a handful of Berber villages still resist the calls of the modern city. Most often breeders of goats or other hardy animals, they are the bearers of a way of life inherited from the dawn of time.

After Marrakech and Essaouira, the Agafay desert transports you to another world, far from today’s hustle and bustle.

Join us in your charming bivouac and get into the swing of things. Settle in quietly and soak up this exceptional site. Dinnertime is approaching: tonight, you’ll eat alone by candlelight. Each day, they concoct a unique menu, typically Moroccan and, of course, delicious!
