Climbing Toubkal, the roof of Morocco

This trek in Morocco is a classic! At 4167m, Toubkal is the highest peak in North Africa. Its ascent is accessible to all good hikers, as it’s essentially a high mountain trek. It’s also an opportunity to discover, in the heart of the Moroccan High Atlas, a Berber people still sheltered from the modern world. The muleteers and guides who accompany you will quickly become your companions and will also facilitate encounters along the way or when crossing villages.

Level of difficulty: sporty. Between 3 and 6h30 of walking per day.
Average daily elevation gain: 1000m.

Depart Marrakech by vehicle for the Atlas valleys, and before Tassa Ouirgane, meet the Berber team accompanying you. Start the trek upstream along the stream in the verdant Azzaden valley, setting up camp before the village of Ikoubline at 1700m. A double tent for the night and a mess tent for meals.

Day 3

Ikoubline - Azib Tamsoult

Discover traditional life in the valley: remote villages clinging to the mountain slopes, peasant life, terraced farming, ancient trees…) Passage to Tizi Oussem then on to Azib Tamsoult. Set up camp at 2300m.

Azib Tamsoult – Neltner Mountain Hut

A sporty and original stage that takes you to the Toubkal base camp via the Agulzim pass (3400 m). From the ridge, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Toubkal summit and surrounding peaks.
Descend and set up camp near the Neltner hut (3105 m). Overnight in tents.

Day 5

Climbing Toubkal

Early morning via the classic route. Ascent of Toubkal 4167 m. Highest peak in North Africa. Descent via the northern route and return to the same bivouac. Overnight in tents.
The ascent is optional: those who prefer to stay at the foot of Toubkal can take a short walk around the base camp or keep our cook company…

Day 6

Imlil

Imlil

You leave the base camp to reach the valley, passing by the Sidi Chamharouch marabout, characterized by a huge white baked rock, a few basic rooms for pilgrims and a few “cafés” for hikers in transit. On to Imlil. At this altitude, mud houses have given way to massive stone constructions. Settle into a mountain cottage. Overnight in dormitories, shared sanitary facilities.

Day 7

Imlil - Marrakech

Breakfast on the terrace, final stroll under the walnut trees, then transfer to Marrakech, arriving late morning, check into your hotel, lunch and dinner on your own. Jemaa el Fna Square, the lively heart of the city, and the souks await you, unless you prefer to enjoy the peace and quiet of your hotel.

1h30 walk + 1h30 drive.

> Bivouac: Every evening, igloo tents (Ferrino brand) are set up near the kitchen tent and mess tent, where meals are served. Mats and carpets provide comfort, and lanterns add to the atmosphere! Toilet facilities are basic and amenities rustic. The most important aspect of this type of trip is meeting the local population and getting to know the Berber teams (guide, cook, camel driver).
Rest assured, your guide and Berber team will help you set up your tent if necessary.

> Hotel: 2 nights in a 3*** standard hotel in Marrakech on a BB basis.

> Gîte: 1 night in a mountain gîte with shared dormitories and sanitary facilities. A must for the ascent of Toubkal.

> On the menu during your trip: We do our utmost to provide you with varied, tasty, balanced and… Moroccan food.
Breakfast: cereals, bread, jam, milk, black tea, mint tea, coffee, chocolate.

Our tips for this trek in Morocco

– Take water purification tablets with you.
– Confirm the route of each stage with your cook before starting each hike.
– Pack a rain cape in your day pack. Risk of thunderstorms.
– Bring shoes for walking in water. Some passages possible.
– Bring enough water each morning before starting the hike.
– In the event of bad weather (e.g. thunderstorms), keep your cook in sight.
– Avoid walking during the hottest part of the day, and cover up to avoid sunstroke (cap or hat).
– Wash your hands with soap before each meal.
– Dress appropriately for village crossings.
