Step 1
Situated on the Atlantic coast, Casablanca hides some beauties, such as the Hassan-II mosque. The Hassan II mosque is the largest in the Maghreb and is considered one of the most beautiful for its grandeur and luxury.
Morocco is one of the few countries to offer such a varied palette of landscapes. A self-drive tour of Morocco is an ideal option for discovering all these wonders: from the great plains of the north to the endless spaces of the deserts of the south, from the verdant mountains of the Middle Atlas to the towering peaks of the High Atlas, from narrow gorges to wide-open valleys, no landscape is overlooked. But a self-drive tour of Morocco also means discovering a culture and a people. Moroccan culture is evident in the great imperial cities, but also in the small villages. You need to take the time to discover all its facets, and that’s what we’re proposing with this 15-day self-drive tour of Morocco!
Regions visited during this trip to Morocco: Fez & the North | Marrakech & surroundings | Essaouira & the Atlantic Coast | Agadir & the Deep South | Atlas Mountains & Sahara
N.B.: This trip to Morocco is an individual tailor-made tour, to be personalized with our Morocco specialist advisors.
Arrival at Casablanca airport. Welcome and transfer to hotel.
Night in Casablanca.
Breakfast included.
Delivery of your vehicle to your hotel. Your Morocco self-drive tour can begin! Departure for Rabat. Visit Morocco’s political capital. An imperial city, Rabat has preserved its ramparts, giving it a special charm. Your route then continues to Meknes, another of the 4 imperial cities. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Meknes will charm you with its narrow streets, its distinctive green minarets… a stroll through its historic center will allow you to soak up its atmosphere.
Night in Fez.
Breakfast included.
Boasting the oldest and, above all, most beautiful Medina in the Arab world, Fez is a must-see on any road trip to Morocco. Larger than Meknes, the city is divided into 3 distinct parts: Fez the young, Fez the semi-old and Fez the old, whose quarters were built at the end of the 8th century. It’s the old quarters that are the most fascinating, and it’s a veritable incursion into history that you’ll experience as you wander through their narrow streets. For the Medina tour, we recommend the services of an official guide, so you can get the most out of your visit and avoid the temptations of false guides.
Night in Fez.
Breakfast included.
Crossing the wooded landscapes with their immense cedars and magnificent lakes of the Middle Atlas region via Azro, Aïn, Leuh, the sources of the Oum er Rbia and Khénifra. Twenty-nine kms after Khénifra, turn left, due east, towards Midelt, a charming little town of 50,000 inhabitants, at the junction of the Middle Atlas and the High Atlas. This gives you an idea of what’s in store for the rest of your Morocco self-drive tour…
Night in Midelt.
Half-board accommodation.
Today’s route continues through the eastern part of the High Atlas. You then follow the impressive Ziz gorges before arriving on an open plain where the first dunes appear. Please note, however, that 4X4 vehicles are not permitted to reach the Merzouga dunes. To get there, leave your vehicle at the hotel and use the services of a “4X4 cab”.
Night in Erfoud.
Half-board accommodation.
The junction crosses endless reg landscapes (residual concentration of pebbles created by wind erosion) stretching to the foot of the Atlas Mountains. From Tineghir, you enter the High Atlas and end your journey in the grandiose landscape of the Todgha Gorge, one of the most impressive in Morocco. At the bottom of the Todgha Gorge lies the sacred fish spring, a source of warmer waters, home to fish that are forbidden to be caught. Let yourself be inspired by this mythical site…
Night in Tineghir.
Half-board accommodation.
Today, your Morocco self-drive tour takes you first to the Dades Gorge, before descending the verdant Dades Valley to Ouarzazate. You’ll be impressed by the multitude of centuries-old Kasbahs lining the road. You then continue on your road book’s itinerary towards the south-east to discover one of the kingdom’s most beautiful valleys: the Drâa Valley.
Night in Skoura.
Half-board accommodation.
You take a winding road to Adgez. This follows the Drâa valley, where palm groves and ochre-coloured skours (fortified villages) follow one another to Zagora. Here, you can continue on to Tamegroute and its Koranic library.
Night in Zagora.
Half-board accommodation.
Drive up the Drâa Valley. You’ll be able to appreciate the multitude of adobe ksours dominating the entire region. If you arrive early in Ouarzazate, there’s still time to enjoy the hotel swimming pool. Remember, a tour of Morocco isn’t just about cultural discoveries, it’s also about relaxation!
Night in Ouarzazate.
Half-board accommodation.
Leaving Ouarzazate, you now enter the Anti-Atlas, much more arid and desert-like than the last regions you crossed. The Anti-Atlas is one of the three elements of the Atlas mountain range, along with the High Atlas and the Middle Atlas. Towards Taliouine, you’ll find a greener landscape, and Taroudant marks the start of the vast, rich Sous plain, where citrus fruits are grown. The village of Taroudant, nicknamed the “little Marrakech“, is sure to charm you.
Night in Taroudant.
Half-board accommodation.
Once again, this self-drive tour of Morocco will surprise you with an abrupt change of scenery and climate. The coastal road skirts the often raging ocean, then passes through a forest that is unique in the world: the famous argan forest. These trees produce white flowers and yellow fruit that goats love – they’re even willing to climb to get them.
Night in Essaouira.
Breakfast included.
Enjoy the morning in Essaouira, where we recommend lunch on the harbor to take in the view. In the afternoon, departure for Marrakech. The road crosses the Haouz plain, very green and highly cultivated in winter. In summer, the scenery is different, more arid. Arrive in Marrakech and hand over your vehicle. The end of your self-guided tour of Morocco is approaching, but you won’t leave without taking the two days you need to visit the imperial city that contributes to the country’s worldwide renown.
Night in Marrakech.
Breakfast included.
In Marrakech, the imperial city, we recommend the following tours: the Palmeraie circuit, the palaces of Marrakech (Médersa and Ben Youssef Museum, Bahia Palace, el Badi Palace, Ar Si Saïd Museum), the Majorelle Gardens and the Menara, and of course the vibrant Jemaa el Fna square and its souks.
Nights in Marrakech.
Breakfast included.
Transfer to the airport and departure from Marrakech.
