Discover the desert from a charming campsite in the Sahara
South of Ouarzazate, the Sahara becomes an inescapable influence over the landscape and sand and palm trees become more and more abundant. Dunes rise to plateaus blackened by the permanent sun and the verdant banks of oueds (desert rivers) wind between mountains. Earthen villages hide their palm groves in the depths of valleys. In this desert, the atmosphere is intoxicating and campsites of canvas tents allow travellers to contemplate the desert in the utmost comfort. Holiday available all year long, except in the summer.

Camp du Desert
Near the dunes of the Chegaga Erg (dune sea) west of Mhamid, in Southern Morocco’s most desert region, lies this enchanting campsite. A two hour drive from the nearest village, it allows you to enjoy real comfort and high service while immersing yourself fully in the Sahara. The camp consists of 15 cotton tents artfully decorated with rugs on the floor. Each traditional caïdal tent is very spacious (25 m²), comfortable and well-equipped: rugs, armchairs, shelving units, trunks, and a double bed (or two twin beds). The dining room is in a circular tent or outside with tablecloths, candelabras and dishware from Fes. The waiters are dressed sharply and the copious meals are typically Moroccan. There are three chemical toilets and 3 shower tents spread out throughout the campsite for easy access. The camp is lit only by lanterns and candles. A camp manager and local guide along with five other members of the staff make sure everything runs to perfection.
A charming inn in Mhamid
As an alternative to these luxury camps you can choose a hotel in Mhamid, the last village in southern Morocco, where the road stops and gives way to the great dunes of the Sahara. This traditional Moroccan establishment is lost in a palm grove only 400 metres from the first dunes. A haven of happiness on the outskirts of the desert, it is in complete harmony with the surrounding nature. Comfortable rooms, quality food, a pool, and gardens of more than two hectares make for an ideal base camp to explore the nearby desert.
